In 1892, a young German Catholic priest landed in Petit Popo. His name was Jakob Muller. He belonged to the Society of the Divine Word (SVD). His mission: to establish the Catholic Church on the Togolese coast. He would stay over twenty years, learning Mina, building relationships with the Lawson kings, and constructing the Saints-Pierre-et-Paul cathedral. His role extended far beyond religion — he served as intermediary between the German colonial administration and local populations, sometimes defending the latter against abuses.
