Where to stay in Petit Popo
Aného offers a range of accommodation that reflects the spirit of the city: authentic, human-scale, far from standardized resorts. Here, you sleep in restored Afro-Brazilian houses, in lagoon eco-lodges where the only sound is water lapping against stilts, or in a local home, in a room overlooking a tree-filled courtyard where the family prepares the evening meal. Luxury is not about star ratings but about the welcome, the morning light on the lagoon, and the silence of the tropical night.
The most authentic and most common choice. Several guesthouses occupy former 19th-century Afro-Brazilian mansions, recognizable by their colorful facades, wrought-iron balconies and shaded interior courtyards. Rooms are simple but well-kept: mosquito net, fan or air conditioning depending on the establishment, private bathroom. Breakfast is included, often consisting of fresh fruit, millet porridge and Touba coffee. The owners are usually Aného families who know the city's history intimately and will happily offer advice. Rate: 8,000 to 15,000 Fcfa per night.
For travelers seeking nature and absolute calm. A few ecological lodges have settled on the lagoon shores, a few minutes from the center by pirogue. Rooms, built from local materials (wood, bamboo, palm), open directly onto the water. No air conditioning: the lagoon breeze and mosquito nets suffice. Electricity is provided by solar panels. Some lodges offer meals based on lagoon fish and garden produce. Activities included or optional: sunset pirogue ride, bird watching, traditional fishing initiation. Rate: 20,000 to 35,000 Fcfa per night, often half-board.
Two establishments in central Aného offer more conventional comfort: air-conditioned rooms with private bathroom, on-site restaurant, wifi in common areas. One occupies a building from the German colonial period, with high ceilings and thick walls that keep the interior cool. The other, more recent, has a swimming pool and a bar with lagoon views. These hotels suit travelers who prefer familiar surroundings while staying in the heart of Aného. Rate: 18,000 to 30,000 Fcfa per night. Booking recommended in high season.
The most immersive experience. Our concierge can connect you with Aného families who welcome travelers into a room in their home. You share meals, discover daily life, learn a few words of Mina, and leave with far more than photos. Comfort is simple, floor mattress or bed, mosquito net, bucket shower or bathroom depending on the house, but the welcome is unforgettable. Free contribution or modest rate as agreed beforehand. This option is particularly appreciated by long-term travelers and researchers.
