Togolese highlife

Highlife was born in Ghana in the 1920s, but it found its first home in Togo in Aneho. Sailors and merchants stopping at Petit Popo brought records, guitars and sheet music. The first orchestras formed in the 1950s, playing in the city's clubs and hotels. Togolese highlife is slower and more languorous than its Ghanaian cousin, reflecting Aneho's coastal atmosphere. Today, a new generation rediscovers this heritage.
